What is Rec Therapy?

"Rec" Therapy is short for Recreational Therapy. It is a treatment service where a therapist supports the participant in using their interests, desires, and goals to find recreational or leisure activities that can improve their overall health and well-being. The American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) states "Recreational Therapy aims to restore, remediate, or rehabilitate the client’s level of functioning and independence in life activities" (ATRA website, 2026). Recreational therapists help others to "overcome barriers to well-being and/or participation in meaningful leisure activities" (ATRA website, 2026).
